Concept and purpose
The MSP Challenge is a tabletop strategy game designed for those with an interest in ecosystem-based Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and sustainable blue economy. The goal of the game is to show some of the dynamic and complex interactions between maritime activities and marine ecosystems and biodiversity.
The game allows the players to experience and discuss the meaning and implications of different maritime strategic objectives such as the blue economy, land-sea interactions, shipping, clean & healthy seas, as well as the good environmental status of the ocean.
The UNESCO-IOC’s MSPglobal programme regularly uses this game in regional and national MSP trainings.
Ocean Commitment
Within the context of the MSProadmap, the Dutch Ministry for Infrastructure and Water Management embarked with UNESCO-IOC and DG MARE on a path of capacity development for MSP globally. The selected method was the development of the MSP Challenge serious board game for the MSPglobal Initiative.
The MSP Challenge materials have been translated in the official UN languages, plus Portuguese to make this MSPglobal training applicable all around.
For the coming years, twelve organisations have volunteered to give MSP trainings in their institutions and share the material with others interested in it.
