In the Western Pacific region, there are already abundant legal instruments in support of marine spatial planning (MSP) in most countries, but with growing demand for more integrated and cross-sectoral planning toward ecosystem-based management and a sustainable blue economy. Furthermore, as a developing region, the capacity for MSP still remains limited and should be prioritized to support effective, adaptable, and sustained MSP processes. The pilot project in the Western Pacific will mainly be implemented in four beneficiary countries (see those confirmed at the bottom of the page – more coming soon).
MSPglobal 2.0 activities will be linked to an Ocean Decade Action named ‘Accelerate Marine Spatial Planning in the Western Pacific and its Adjacent Areas’, which is led by the IOC Sub Commission for the Western Pacific and its Adjacent Areas (WESTPAC).
Planned activities on national and regional level
> Implement the new MSPglobal Rapid Assessment Methodology in the beneficiary countries of the Western Pacific
> Organise national trainings, workshops, and meetings to build institutional capacity and advance their MSP processes
> Organise regional meetings to foster transboundary cooperation on MSP among neighbouring countries of the Western Pacific
> Co-develop a regional roadmap for the Western Pacific with recommendations and actions on MSP and sustainable blue economy
Desired outcome
> Institutionally strengthened, knowledge-based, and participatory national MSP processes as well as improved regional ocean governance in the Western Pacific
