MSPglobal beneficiary countries agree on regional roadmaps for the Western Mediterranean and Southeast Pacific

Building on capacity development activities to foster knowledge exchange and dialogue, the MSPglobal Initiative has guided the beneficiary countries of its pilot projects towards the formulation of recommendations on transboundary Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) and Sustainable Blue Economy.

Over the first semester of 2021, the MSPglobal Initiative compiled recommendations proposed by the National Focal Points and National Experts of the Western Mediterranean and Southeast Pacific in order to develop a roadmap in each region.

These recommendations were prioritized and then organized in five thematic blocks that mirror the MSProadmap jointly adopted by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO and the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE):

  1. Inter-institutional and cross-border articulation;
  2. Blue economy;
  3. Ecosystem approach;
  4. Research, development, innovation and training;
  5. Participation and communication.

On 22 June 2021, in order to disseminate the results of this collaborative process, the MSPglobal National Focal Points of Colombia, Ecuador, Panama and Peru presented the recommendations for the Southeast Pacific during an open online seminar, as well as the relevance of each theme for their own country. About 100 participants attended this event, of which more than 80% were stakeholders from the beneficiary countries.

On the other hand, the recommendations agreed by the MSPglobal National Focal Points of the Western Mediterranean were presented by Julian Barbière, Head of Section for Marine Policy and Regional Coordination of IOC-UNESCO, to the WestMED Initiative during its Steering Committee meeting on 30 June 2021. This regional roadmap was officially endorsed by the WestMED Initiative to build on the existing mechanisms and partnerships related to marine/maritime issues, and with a view to strengthening cooperation on MSP and the blue economy between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
